    React Culture React culture consists of any social or cultural norm privileging anything less than properly resolving needs . react culture - privileged reactions Privileged reaction # 4 Avoidance culture Privileged evasion of uncomfortable material. properly resolving needs Avoidance culture 8/3/26 1 Avoidance culture When conservatives dump on the progressive narrative about microaggressions (i.e., accidental faux pas against marginalized folks), their reactions to apparent leftist hypersensitivity to discriminations doesn’t make such injustices go away. Any avoided problem stays in place. When progressive decry such pushback as “racist” or “privileged”, their reactions to conservatives or independents expressing their need for self-determination and liberty doesn’t make such essentials for functioning go away. Indeed, they persist louder. When using the law as a complainant/plaintiff against a defendant, avoided details will undermine actual justice. Anything avoided of importance is sure to come back and bite you in the ass. Avoidance culture covers that set of social norms that privilege evading awareness or engagement of others with whom one affects. Often to avoid what feels uncomfortable to face, but also to avoid what cannot be cognitively processed in the moment, or for any other reason to steer clear from matters of importance. Defunction: alienation & avoidance norms Avoiding reality rarely makes that reality go away. If that piece of ignored reality affects your needs, then your need gets impacted without your awareness or engagement. That’s a good reason not to perpetually numb your pain. Your pain only exists to warn you of some threat or threats to remove. Left in place, such threats provoke even more pain. You best avoid social norms privileging avoidance of the uncomfortable. Lest you grow alienated from life itself. Connection involves some momentary discomforts. Endured discomforts lose their sting when resulting in meaningful growth. Instead of sensitivity to the affected needs of others, these set of norms rationalize the acceptability of overlooking others in pain. It expects impersonal norms to be enough. Or to trust hyperrationality norms that expect others to conclude the same as themselves, which avoids how reality actually works. Such avoidance is a key element of toxic legalism . Which correlates with unresolved needs, compromised wellness and suffering pain. Examples: Demonstrating an intent to simplify complex matters into palatable soundbites, to the point of evading uncomfortable details one would prefer to ignore. Being dismissive toward the views of others by characterizing a weakness in that view as emblematic of the whole idea, as grounds to not face strong points in that view. Investing more focus (consuming limited time and energy) on one point over another, effectively missing what that other point could offer. Accepting motivated reasoning to rationalize not investigating further, effectively reinforcing blind spots. Easing needs or relieving pain from unresolved exposed needs , while ignoring the likely consequence of perpetuating the problem as those needs persist unresolved, compromising functionality while seeming to fix the problem (which can then be blamed on the individual for not properly applying the avoidant solution). A relatively simple conflict requiring discipline and uncomfortable sacrifices to settle gets characterized as too complex to solve, if only to bypass such discipline and sacrifices. And sometime to preserve the familiarity of the conflict over the fear of the unknown. Citing established norms and routine procedures as reason enough not to fully address a problem, preferring not to upset the status quo which likely has elements necessary and best preserved while also including elements to be excised for the sake of resolving needs more effectively. Denouncing any attempt to understand all sides to a conflict as "bothsidesism" or "moral equivalency" that avoids identifying and addressing the inflexible needs of one or more sides. Heralding one side in a conflict that more effectively conveys its message, or gets it out to a wider audience, to the point of dismissing any helpful critique of any opposing side, regardless of the intent of any of the sides. Overgeneralizing to avoid dealing with messy details. Like when the Trump admin overgeneralized about gender affirming care (which does have some excesses worthy of critique) as mere gender ideology, to avoid the nuance of gender diversity. Or when the Biden admin overgeneralized the need for porous borders to avoid the messy details of vetting an overwhelming volume of immigrants (include some who present a threat to others). Argumentative "debating" to appear as if interested in investigating the facts but actually to assert one's own beliefs and dismiss or disparage contrasting beliefs. Video titles on YouTube manifest this when one side claims to "destroy" or "crush" the other side, without addressing all the relevant nuance involved. Avoidance works with adversarialism to REACT and not RESPOND to inflexible needs . See conflict porn . Contrasts with the wisdom that there is less reason to debate when you can vulnerably relate . Factors adversarialism bandwagon effect, groupthink constrained cognitive bandwidth shrinking presence convenient simplification to oversimplification de-intellectualize or "dumbing down" complicated matters delegate to expertise diffusion of responsibility discomfort coping emotion suppression or repression epistemic reductionism hyperrationality life can be too busy to attend to every detail normalized alienation overthinking avoidance suppressing useful reflection overwhelming stimuli perfidy and other deceptive modes pisticentricity (low epistemic reliability ) privileged avoidance relevant content dismissed as irrelevant social norms privileging evasion diminishing awareness using: ...biased assumptions ...cognitive biases or distortions ...propaganda techniques ...loaded language/terms ...defense mechanisms ...logical fallacies arguing under the veneer of "debating " hyperbole for overgeneralizing what is to be avoided empathy nullified or squashed Propaganda privileging avoidance “Do you think Israel has the right to exist?” Does the United States have a right to exist? If so, do the original sovereign tribal nations in this land have a right to exist, independent of the United States? See how this goes to the core of the question? Do a people fleeing religious or ethnic persecution have a right to invade another land and take it over for their own benefit? If so, does that confer to them a right to oppress that land’s original indigenous inhabitants? Does sympathy for their past endured oppression excuse oppressing others? Hurt people hurt people? Can they then justify it all in the name of their beliefs and still honestly claim to be democratic? Do they then vilify any original inhabitants who resist such occupation as “hostiles” or “terrorists”? Like many Israelis, I too am a dual citizen. I am an enrolled member of the Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin while also a U.S. citizen. But my loyalties are more to the liberty of everyone to freely resolve their needs, despite any manipulate elites of any government. Does any socially constructed state have a “right” to exist? Or do the people have a right to security and sovereignty and other innate needs regardless of their government? Jefferson suggested as much 250 years ago in the U.S. Declaration of Independence. Or doesn’t liberty matter anymore? All this to draw attention to the social norms in Israeli society privileging avoidance. Such as avoiding awareness of how it has become an Apartheid state similar but not the same as South Africa. And avoidance of how its actions in Gaza can be characterized as a genocide, usually by emphasizing exception and evading any uncomfortable critique. Would it be antisemitic or anti-Zionist to stay silent and let Israeli society implode from the catastrophic consequences of such privileged avoidance? Has Israeli culture devolved into what some scholars identify as a victimhood culture ? Is the familiar pain now felt preferable to the less familiar pain feared? Will not that pain eventually intensify from reacting to it now with privileged avoidance? Is that wise? Refunction: responsive engagement path Need-response counters such avoidance norms by incentivizing us to relate to each other’s publicly affected needs. Instead of complacently reverting back into our silos, we can break out of our isolation and engage each other, to honor the needs of others as our own. Specifically, expressing to others about yourself only what you know to be true. And qualifying how well you know something to be true or untrue of yourself. 3 .1 A Need experience The flipside, of course, is dishonesty. Deception prevents one or both sides in an interaction to accurately identify and address the relevant needs. Worse, it can spur one to create trouble of avoidable needs . In an attempt to avoid pain of vulnerability , for example, it creates more pain later. Lying often avoids pain of facing what is true. Honesty serves as a social glue for holding social capital together. You interact with each as you authentically are. You make it possible or others to encounter your actual self, your reality, where you are honestly at. You can enhance your honest by avoiding language with multiple or dubious meaning. You discipline your expression to convey exactly what you intend, and check with the recipient’s feedback. How honest you are depends on the situation. Your level of self-exposure depends on how trustworthy the recipient shows to be with the information. You are not explicitly dishonest when withholding information from someone who could abuse with that self-revelation. No human has any legitimate authority over your naturally existing needs. No authority can declare you must now float in midair at odds with gravity. No authority can change your need for water or your need for acceptance or for security. No one can change what you naturally require, not even yourself. Description Which do you think is more likely? Enjoying modern conveniences may require us to give up a few freedoms. OR The more we rely on authorities for what we once provided for ourselves, the more coercive authorities can get. Anankelogy The less we can provide for ourselves, the more vulnerable to the whims of those we must relyupon. I cannot dig my own well for water, for example, so I must take the word of those who tell me this city water is okay to drink. What if it isn’t ? Even if I could dig my own well, I do not have the time. Even if I could test my own faucet water, I am content deferring to local authorities who persuade me to trust its quality. Our lives run deep with countless instances of having to defer to authorities. What if local authorities advise me to boil my water ? Annoyingly inconvenient, but fine. What if local authorities drastically raise my water bill ? Deeply frustrating, but I’ve got to have water. What if local authorities shut of my city water supply due to nonpayment by my landlord? Now I’m utterly disgusted! Each encroachment on my access to water acclimates me to tolerate what I would have objected before. Each government intrusion into my personal affairs—like warrantless surveillance of my private conversations overseas—conditions me to put up with a few more invasions of my privacy. Each minor infringement upon my right to access quality healthcare coerces me to settle for whatever crumbs the authorities permit. Our vulnerable dependencies tend to incentivize authorities to gradually impose upon our unchosen needs . You can choose how to respond to authorities. But you cannot choose to no longer require self-efficacy . Or cease your necessity for equal treatment . Or stop your need for the dependability of others. Each time you cannot resolve such needs, you naturally suffer emotional pain. Authorities often coerce us into accepting their pain relief options as the only available option. Adversarial justice and polarizing politics induce us to settle for the winning side in a court or ballot battle. They rarely inspire us to identify and resolve all painful needs. This easily pulls us into relying upon them to ease the mounting pain they help to perpetuate. We increasingly submit to their influence. At least we don’t seek their permission to breathe, yet. Need-response Populism is in part a reaction to failing elite-led institutions. Their authority counts on the populous accepting their expertise. The less responsive to our inflexible needs , the less trust we have in their institutions. The more their impositions go against our needs, the more we understandably resist. But the more our lives depend upon their institutions, the more some of cast a blind eye to their shortcomings. We can explain away their imperfections. We could rationalize how no institution ever fully lived up to its founding purpose. We may even accept their narrative that any failings are mostly our personal fault. These authoritative powerholders rely on untested assumptions about how to impact our lives. But they do not know what they do not know. These elite influencers could use impact data that we ourselves provide to them, as condition to earning the legitimacy to impact on our lives. Reactive Problem Anankelogy distinguishes between “ascribed legitimacy” and “earned legitimacy” of authorities. Ascribed legitimacy : Arbitrary acceptance of authority prone to manipulation and coerced low responsiveness to the needs of those under that authority. Earned legitimacy : Cultivated acceptance of authority by incentivizing authority figures with impact data that evidentially demonstrates they have enabled the full resolution of subordinate needs. Contemporary norms rely heavily on ascribed legitimacy. But as the rule based international order breaks down , tolerance for mere ascribed legitimacy collapses. U.S. hypocrisy , especially in its relation with the Israeli far-right government , exposes the compounding incompetencies of authorities too removed from everyday lives to aptly empathize with those they negatively impact. Instead of actively respecting each other’s needs, uniformed authorities react to conflicts with an indulgent call to arms. On the world stage of geopolitics, this arguably bloats the military industrial complex . Weapons manufacturers benefit from forever wars , and not so much from peacetime. Uninformed authorities coerce us with fearmongering and self-serving pleas for tax revenue to “protect” national security , often without tested evidence . And always without addressing the underserved needs igniting the conflict. Big money incentives legacy media to play along. Too many of us fall in line. Metaphorically, we settle for asking their permission to breathe. In short, current authorities lack the kind of discipline that anankelogy can offer to improve their legitimacy. Responsive Solution For starters, asserting the objective fact of inflexibly unchosen needs can become a gamechanger. No longer can authorities blindly expect you to simply go along with their chosen policies. They must now recognize everyone’s impacted unchosen needs and unchosen priority . They will now be confronted with the indisputable reality that whatever they reactively resist they reflexively reinforce . Second, join us in raising the bar with mutual regard . Reject the false promises of avoidant adversarialism . Replace it with the higher standard of engaging mutuality . Join us in mutually nurturing our capacity to be more loving toward each other. Together, we cease conflating our unchosen needs with our chosen responses to them. Such moral conflation denies them earned legitimacy . To earn legitimacy, authorities must engage the unchosen needs and priorities on all sides of any conflict. This effectively brings them out of the debilitating traps of avoidant adversarialism . We level the playing field by encouraging powerful authorities to be recognized as mere fallible humans. We affirm their unchosen needs and priorities to model how they are to affirm ours. We raise the standard to social love . We affirm the legitimacy of their influence in our lives the more they demonstrably appreciate our vulnerable needs . When we say “you shall love ” we mean it. If we prove ourselves more affirming of each other’s needs, then we may assert greater legitimacy than them. Engage! Breathe freely. You don’t require anyone’s permission to breathe. Or to resolve any of your needs. And nobody needs your permission to resolve theirs. No one can bend the facts of anyone’s inflexible needs . Affirm the unchosen needs of others as you would have them affirm your unchosen needs . Hold the powerful accountable to this higher standard by lovingly refusing their coerciveness . Put love first. To resolve one's own needs at the involuntary expense of others, negatively impacting their needs. For example, stealing their food (negatively impacting their need for food security) so you can satiate your hunger. You fully resolve your body's nutrient requirements in a way that prevents others from fully resolving their needs. Opposite to properly resolving needs . See objective evil or evil . indulgent side-taking (n. & v. ) - DEFUNCTION The defunction of choosing to support a side in some conflict against the opposing side as a way to pacify discomfort, instead of taking the disciplined approach of empathy and mutual regard to address each other’s affected needs. This shameless rush to a take side typically... overemphasizes each other's differences while disregarding common ground, relies on impersonal arguments to avoid engaging relevant specifics, resists addressing or resolving needs when easing discomfort of those needs, opposes the other side’s inflexible needs that they cannot change, called moral conflation (i.e., conflates unchosen needs with chosen responses to them), misapplies critique of moral relativism and moral neutrality , provokes the opposed side’s defensiveness to produce more of what is opposed , and self-righteously and arrogantly serves own conflict porn to win at the expense of others. Although aiming to ease pain , it usually results in more pain since it overlooks the affected needs prompting that pain (i.e., discomfort avoidance ). See premature opposition and oppo culture . This contrasts with a more disciplined approach to take a side on a contested issue, which could include a negotiated agreement on a resolution path to mutually solve the issue. See adversarialism and avoidant adversarialism . inflexible need (n. ) Another identifier of core needs, organic needs, or natural needs . Refers to unchosen needs that automatically occur in response to a diminished ability to function. Distinguishes from flexible responses to needs, which colloquially can be called a need, but anankelogy refers to as a preference or access need . E.g., I inflexibly need water when thirsty but if I say I need a bottle of water, I am more accurately saying that I prefer the water that my body requires to be provided in a bottle. Since water is the only or primary way to restore by body's fluid equilibrium, it is an inflexible need since I cannot choose anything else that would restore my fluid equilibrium as effectively. The bottle is a flexible "access need" since I could flexibly get the water I inflexibly need directly from a faucet or a glass. Distinguishing between inflexible natural needs and flexible access needs can save us from many unfortunate problems. We often falsely expect others to change their inflexible needs. We would do better to focus on flexible access needs, on how we each flexibly respond to our core inflexible needs.
