Financial constraints Steph Turner struggles to lay the foundation for this service while being underemployed, economically exploited, and financially overcommitted. Underemployed After being wrongly convicted in 1993 , I was never able to get a good paying job. Employers can legally discriminate against me, despite my viable claim of innocence . I now work at a factory that hires ex-felons, at basement level wages. This puts me in something of a catch-22. I am trying to create a service to address this problem, but I first must solve the problem to be able to start the service. Your gift could help me find a way out if this conundrum. Economically exploited The wrongful conviction denies my many rights you can take for granted. That injustice kept me from finishing my master’s degree in counseling in 2015 . Now my wages are to be garnished by a state collection bureau. I am currently challenging this action with the need-response alternative. Overcommitted When testing this new service, I tried demonstrating the benefit of being more responsive to each other. I offered to do simple favors for others.     React Culture React culture consists of any social or cultural norm privileging anything less than properly resolving needs . react culture - privileged reactions Privileged reaction # 5 Oppo culture Caustic adversarialism trapping us in mutual defensiveness. properly resolving needs Oppo culture 8/3/26 1 Oppo culture When progressives oppose conservatives for being visibly insensitive to those experiencing intersectionality (i.e., how overlapping forms of discrimination typically has multiplying effects), reacting to a group that functions best when self-motivated and not shamed into compliance fails to sustainably help the marginalized. When conservatives oppose intersectionality as mere slogan, reacting to those championing the intersectionally marginalized fails to demonstrate the conservative value for personal freedom or self-initiative. Opposing what your foe needs does not extinguish a conflict but enflames it . Opposing another’s inflexible needs predictably and needlessly triggers their defensiveness. Which leads to more problems than respecting their affected needs. No matter how privileged by widely accepted norms, no one can change what their life requires to keep functioning. Short for "opposition culture", oppo culture refers to the set of written and unwritten norms that privileges or compels one to take an antagonistic stance against others with whom one disagrees. Often to the point of opposing what they cannot change: their needs. Defunction: adversarialism norms Oppo culture privileges instantly opposing others in objectifying ways. Disagreement turns into harsh hostilities. This set of adversarial norms privilege provoking defensiveness, instead of asking questions out of genuine curiosity. Any potential for mutual regard gets immediately tossed aside. Resistance from the provoked “proves” how evil they are. Little to no reflection can be afforded to recognize one’s own fault in the matter. And human potential for empathy, understanding and love gets summarily quashed. These social norms normalize adversarialism. As explained by sociologist Gordon Fellman in his book Rambo and the Dalai Lama , adversarialism is opposing others largely for the sake of opposition. To overcome others, to win over others for some personal or team gain. Anankelogy recognizes this privileged reaction as “indulgent side-taking ”. Typically to pacify some discomfort, this rush to a take side typically includes these eight features. Overemphasizes each other's differences while disregarding common ground. Relies on impersonal arguments to avoid engaging relevant specifics. Resists addressing or resolving needs when easing discomfort of those needs. Opposes the other side’s inflexible needs that they cannot change, called moral conflation (i.e., conflates inflexible needs to flexible responses to them). Misapplies critique of moral relativism and moral neutrality . Dismisses good faith efforts to understand all sides as bothsidesism or false balance . All natural needs affected by a conflict exist equally . Provokes the opposed side’s defensiveness to produce more of what is opposed . Self-righteously and arrogantly serves own conflict porn to win at the expense of others. These widely privileged reactions pull many into perpetual conflict. Getting defensive triggersthe other’s defenses, effectively capturing both sides in mutual defensiveness. Each dig in their heels and stay guarded instead of meaningfully resolving the conflict. Examples: Politics tend to be rich with examples of privileged adversarial reactions. Wokeism . Opposing “woke ” without defining the term or showing empathy toward those who find hope in raising awareness of suffered social inequalities, many who readily admit that it gravitated into a petty “wokeism” that turned excessive, but not that continuing social injustices are okay. After all, is not the opposite of woke is to stick your head in the sand and let some marketing genius convince you of his attractive lies? Capitalism . Denouncing capitalism as a monolithic economic system without recognizing how nimble business ownership incentivized enough productivity to lift many out of the tyranny of abject poverty, or recognizing those business owners who admit some faults within capitalism. DEI . Opposing Diversity Equality Inclusion initiatives without addressing ongoing forms of systemic discrimination against marginalized groups risks igniting a backlash. Any excessive pro-DEI policy can be addressed and adjusted where necessary, without unraveling what marginalized people’s inflexibly need for their lives. In the long run, it does not serve the interests of conservatives if sparking a return to privileged prejudice and legalized discrimination for what no one can change. Russiagate . Russians did interfere with the 2016 election and Trump did vocally welcome it . Trump’s abrasive style smashed the Overton window on many fronts. From using Gish gallop to flooding the zone , he practically incited the Democrats to push back. On the surface, Democratic resistance appeared to blame Trump’s victory over Hillary on Russian collusion. The deeper story—passed over by both legacy and independent media—was how to return to a more civil politics. The Russian collusion narrative appeared to me as mere cope. Now we tolerate a race to the bottom, which furthers public disillusionment with the political process. If violence erupts, Trump appears ready to misuse the Insurrection Act to hold onto power. At its core, “Russiagate” was never actually about Russian collusion but about guarding democracy from a charismatic demagogue. The narrative distraction now seems to be working in Trump’s favor. Terrorism . One side’s resistance fighter is another side’s terrorist. Resistance fighters can win sympathy for their cause, but not so much if painted as terrorists. If we’re honest, almost all wars end up targeting noncombatants. George Washinton supported terrorizing and ethnic cleansing the Haudenosaunee for siding with the British amidst the Revolutionary War. The label is loaded language to coerce public perception away from the disadvantaged fighter’s cause. Any form of asymmetric warfare—guerillas, insurgents, rebels, militants—is easier to paint as the bad guys when having the resources to control the narrative. Meanwhile, keeping the war going by ignoring the underlying needs tends to be good for business for arms dealers, geopolitical actors and other benefiting stakeholders. Zionism . Supporting Holocaust survivors and their offspring to have a land of their own washes over the colonialist methods used to serve that end. The colonialism that early Zionists learned from their European oppressors has no place among Arabs already living in the lands around Jerusalem. Now their vehement resistance gets used against them, while their more diplomatic attempts get mostly ignored. Both Israeli Jews and the Palestinians have an inflexible need for security and for sovereignty, along with other needs that neither side can adjust for the other. Provoking each side’s defenses serves warmongers more than each side’s need for peace. There can be no peace until such objectively existing needs get properly respected. All else is commentary. Also see coerced poor options dependence (CoPOD), symfunction capture , and systemic exaction . wellness campaign (n. ) [wellness campaign terminology] A specialized service offered by need-response that focuses on resolving the client's identified wellness need(s) while respecting the identified needs of others. Instead of trying to relieve pain, a wellness campaign aims to resolve needs to remove cause for pain, and reach more potential. Unlike private healthcare of psychotherapy, the client makes public their wellness goal and invites others to support it. Instead of seeking to change the individual to adjust to life as it is, a wellness campaign seeks to change relationship dynamics to be more responsive to each other's needs. This includes incentivizing the socially powerful to demonstrably be more responsive to the vulnerable needs of those they impact. Unlike legal approaches by attorneys and political activists, the intent is not to win at another's expense but to raise everyone's functioning level. Instead of conformity to interpreted laws, a wellness campaign incentivizes all involved to go beyond minimal legal requirements to resolve the needs laws exist to serve. This includes incentivizing authority figures to rely less on impersonal laws and more on earning legitimacy by enabling us all to resolve our needs. A wellness campaign goes through four to five phases, each meant to address one of the four levels of human problems . The campaign typically concludes at the end of the final phase with the client reaching their wellness goal. Some campaigns can transition into other campaign types. Three types of wellness campaigns currently exist; 1) case campaign to address the client's wellness need; 2) project campaign to address wellness needs of those similarly situated; and 3) movement campaign as a coalition of project campaigns. wellness impedence (n. & v. ) DEFUNCTION Akin to “obstruction of justice”, the hindrance of any good faith effort to mutually understand, address and properly resolve the inflexible needs of all identified. Applies primarily to powerholders approached to respect the impacted needs of those vulnerable to their social influence. (NRA element) wellness offender (n. ) [wellness campaign terminology] Anyone interfering or resisting the resolution of identified needs after provided ample opportunity to report any impact on their own needs. See anti-wellness . wellness optimization (n. ) REFUNCTION Pursuing peakfunction by identifying and addressing all relevant underserved needs, toward properly resolving each one wellness paradox (n. ) REFUNCTION The apparent contradiction that improved functioning requires something profoundly wise that at first seems unwise, or at least challenges conventional norms and widely adopted beliefs. Examples: Personal responsibility depends upon social responsibility from others; social responsibility depends upon the personal responsibility of us all. The best rational understanding integrates the emotional prioritization of needs defying rationality. “If facts don’t care about feelings, then our need-prioritizing feelings don’t care about our rational facts.” Effective generalizing starts on the foundation of relevant specifics. Pain can only be fully removed by first embracing it and letting it report the threat to be removed. Merely relieving pain typically invites more pain. The best way to oppose another’s actions is to first accept their inflexible needs prompting such questionable actions. Consider Kohlberg’s levels of moral development , and the results of prioritizing postconventional morality of properly resolving each other’s inflexible needs over conventional morality of external ethics. This can counter wisdom resistant conventionality below. wellness resistance (n. ) DEFUNCTION Acclimating to norms of less-than-optimal resources, of normalizing unresolved needs and coping with the resulting emotional pain. This may include gravitating toward dependence of less-than-optimal options to the neglect of seeking optimal resources (i.e. primary resources ). See CoPOD (coereced poor options dependence) and symfunction capture . In contrast with wellness impedence applied mainly to powerholders, wellness resistance describes the actions of the relatively powerless, who remain vulnerable to the social influence of powerholders in power differentials. wellness resistant conventionality (n. ) DEFUNCTION The limitation imposed on full functioning of human life by remaining attached to widely accepted views that are easier to understand and mutually supported. Often reinforced by social norms that prioritizes symfunctionality over peakfunctional potential. See drift . Examples: Everyone must take personal responsibility for their choices and actions (without attention to the real limitations of options for those choices) and stop blaming the “system” for their personal problems (which can prompt false guilt, anxiety and depression from not being able to overcome external limitations). We are rational thinkers who must assert reason over our emotions (which generalizes all emotionsas irrational instead of intensified when needs go unmet) and seek to control nature with our minds by reducing our choices to cognitive processes in which we have control (which knowingly ignores all that exists outside of human control). You must not overthink matters too much and accept explanations that can ease our dissonance without too much trouble (which tends to solidify into overgeneralizations that overlook relevant specifics shaping our lives). Pain is bad and best avoided (which typically leaves in place the threat such pain reports, ensuring less functionality and more pain as your body insists you remove that threat) and everyone ‘s right to privacy is more important than communal values (which pulls us all into isolation and disabling alienation). We must oppose those who are wrong because those who don’t take a stand on political issues will fall for anything (which neglects the distinction between inflexible needs and flexible responses to those needs, then perpetuates conflict as each side must dig in their heals to guard the inflexible needs and inflexible priorities they cannot change). Consider Kohlberg’s levels of moral development , and recognize the impact from a culture of prioritizing conventional morality anchored in external ethics over postconventional morality committed to properly resolving each other’s inflexible needs. Character refunction 7 A forgiveness Forgiveness is here defined as letting go of anger toward another who acted toward you, or to others you care about, in ways you found objectionable. What you rejected you no longer reject as intensely. This includes releasing anger toward yourself, to release your own sense of shame. 7 .1 A Need experience Others wrong you when doing something you perceive as (and may well be) a threat to you. Social norms grant you various forms of retribution, from mildly embarrassing the offender to charging the offender with a felony leading to a death penalty. Threatening them in return offers some relief from your pain. But rightful retribution seldom resolves needs, and can provoke avoidable needs . Releasing your anger frees you to focus on more important matters. Easing your rejection of the person can segue to specifically rejecting their challenged actions. Then segue further to rejecting the conditions behind the offense while affirming the identified offender. You create a clean slate to hopefully make it easier to address the relevant needs more responsibly. By forgiving the offender, you consider the needs of the other person, and target your rejection to how their unresolved needs painfully impacted you. You cease linking the painful action of the other as essentially the same as that other person. You refuse to let any hatred get a foothold in your attitude toward life. You inspire the offender to be honest and humble , to be more prosocial. You prioritize resolving all the needs involved. 7 .2 A Defunctionalizing Info This subsection applies 'relational knowing' statements to illuminate how this defunction relationally lowers your ability to fully function. You function better. You can do things better. Your wellness improves. You no longer must waste precious time and energy struggling to cope. You can invest your focus on continuing to resolve your needs and helping others to resolve theirs. It gets easier for you to do for them as you would have them do for you. Description Which would you prefer? Fend for yourself and avoid being vulnerable to others, since you only can trust yourself fully. OR Expand more of your life’s potential by cultivating meaningful and deep connections with others. Anankelogy As fewer of your needs fully resolve, you naturally cannot function as well as before. The less you can function, the quicker you naturally prioritize more essential matters. You must put your full potential on hold. As you go through modern life fending for yourself, you tend to fall prey to situations where your needs cannot fully resolve without the cooperation of others. Others are too busy fending for their own essentials. No one it seems fully resolves their needs. You don’t personally know anyone living up to their full potential, so you accept your lot as normal. If you dared to reach out to offer someone help, you know you risk being exploited. Despite the promises of modernity to make life easier, everyone seems to have it a little harder. And effectively become less loving than our recent communal ancestors. Need-response The more you honor the needs of others as your own, the more you inspire at least some of them to honor your needs as their own. You tap into your life’s potential when ready to boldly love another like no one has loved them before. Need-response provides an effective communication framework to honor their needs as much if not more than your own. It follows the praise sandwich format, to sandwich your less pleasant message about how they affect your needs between positive affirmations of them. POSITIVE: “Thank you for your [value to me].” NEGATIVE: “When you [act in a certain way, it affects my need].” POSITIVE: “The more you respond to my needs, the more I can faithfully respond to your needs.” For example, apply this to each other’s need to be better understood. P: “Thank you for listening to me and trying your best to relate to what I experienced.” N: “When you joked that I took things too personally, it felt like you didn’t fully understand.” P: “The more you can empathize with this traumatic experience, the easier I can relate to yours.” Here’s another example. P: “I appreciate that you took the time to ask me how I am doing.” N: “Saying ‘I’m fine’ is only half true, as I am still struggling to cope with all the harm.” P: “I trust I can share more, as your patient with me as I thoroughly grieve this terrible loss.” Keeping any unpleasant message squeezed between some positivity helps to sustain our potential to be more caring toward each other. Reactive Problem Yes, such engagement opens you to possible exploitation. Not everyone will respond in good faith. Some will assume you must have an ulterior motive. “Why are you trying to be so nice to me?” Others will reject your overtures of kindness for many reactive reasons. You counter exploitation or unresponsiveness with assertive need-response. You hold firm. Humble and firm. You persist in your intent, and not react with defensiveness. If others cannot appreciate your responsive effort, move on. Seek those you can trust to be more responsive to your offers of lovingkindness. Build your courage with early successes with them. Don’t let anyone detract you from the higher ideals of love. Don’t let anyone distract you from your full potential to spread more love in this world. Don’t let anyone or anything detach you from a deeper connection with all life Responsive Solution When you experience yourself as one with the universe, you intuitively recognize that whatever you do to others you ultimately do to yourself. At a profoundly deep level, we are all connected . Smile more often. See others smile in return. Offer small acts of kindness. Witness some reciprocate your generosity. When needing friendship, be a friend to them. Expand your social capital, your outlook on life, your potential to mature your empathy toward others. Relate to others as you would have them relate to you. Find someone who’s as responsive as you. Recharge each other’s batteries, likely drained from all those distrusting souls out there. Keep each other’s love alive. Get to know what others need, and how they need it. Humbly share your needs with them. Cultivate your trustworthiness by consistently respecting their needs. Show them how much you value them by your wiliness to put their interests ahead of your own. Let love be your guide. Be honest about your mistakes, your shortcomings, your emotional wounds still healing, your times of doubt and distrust, your fears of being hurt again, and your willingness to risk more pain to reach more of your potential to love and be loved.
